Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic had the gunslinger's music, but Brendan Schaub delivered the single-shot victory at the Ultimate Fighting Championship's show on Saturday.Schaub (8-1) recorded a third-round technical knockout of Filipovic (27-9-2, one no-contest) at UFC 128 in Newark. The result followed their patterns of recent years: Schaub now has seven knockout wins in eight victories; four of Filipovic's last five losses have been stoppages caused by punches, including knockouts in his last two fights.
One punch was all that Schaub needed to signal the end. Countering off of a low left kick from Filipovic, Schaub landed a right hand behind the ear. Filipovic fell the mat dazed and ate one more punch that snapped his head before referee Herb Dean could halt the fight.
From the start, Schaub pressed the action while Filipovic followed his usual tactic of circling and waiting for openings to throw straight punches or his left kick. Schaub shot for takedowns every round, roughed up his opponent in the clinch and blocked Filipovic's rare attempts at the high left kick that once was the most feared strike in mixed martial arts.
Compustrike counted 22 power strikes for Schaub, compared to 12 for Filipovic. Schaub also recorded four takedowns, more than any Filipovic opponent in recent memory.
Years removed from his prime as the premier striker in Pride Fighting Championships, Filipovic after each of his recent fights has openly considered retiring. He entered the arena Saturday's fight to moody, Western-themed music, a departure from Duran Duran's "Wild Boys" song that has characterized most of his entrances since the Pride era.
Filipovic was competitive enough on Saturday to rekindle memories of his glory years, UFC President Dana White said. But the loss to Schaub indicates that Filipovic should retire from fighting, White added.
